Nice. New strings are awesome, right?
On such topic, I'll be getting new strings for Devadander on his birthday. Hopefully some really low gauge ones. I wanna bend em like Cliff Burton. Rest his soul. Anyway. Ernie Ball or D'Addario, which is better?
They are!! I eanna get an electric violin soon

What's ya proudest instrument moment? This includes times when you've learned something or realized something mindblowing about music theory. It does not include accidentally Kurt Cobain-ing your favorite guitar.
Probably my proudest moment was in 6th grade when I finally decided I was going to learn hand independence on the piano, sat down, practiced it a lot, and eventually got it down.
I was also pretty proud making my 8th grade talent show with two of my friends with a medley of songs from Undertale. I was on piano the whole time, while the other two switched instruments to better fit the songs.

In 7th grade I played a solo, got a rating better than what my teacher said was the best rating, and the critique section (written by the judges) read "You're only in 7th grade?!?!?!?" and that was literally it.

Here it is. I still did a pretty shitty job of playing it, I totally screwed up in that middle part. Overall I need to work on my note consistency. But I have like 6 weeks to work on it before I have to perform so I should be fine.
What do y’all think? Is there anything I should change?
52.231 days ago
Apr 19, 2023 - 2:22 AM
A few notes on how to be more consistent:
1. Practice hands separate with a metronome. Right now, it seems like you've got a good sense of what the overall beat of the piece is supposed to feel like. However, your rhythm is a bit off. Take, for instance, the start of the piece. Your arpeggios in the right hand have accents every third note, since that's the beat of the piece. But, those triplets should each be the same length. Practice just those triplets so they all sound even. It seems like you're playing 112 per quarter right now, so you could set a metronome to 336 or 112 on triplets to work on that.
2. When it comes to pacing the music, the bass is a big part. It sounds like you're forcing the left hand right now, when you should really think about dropping your hand. There's two ways to think about pressure on the keyboard - forced and natural. Forced pressure is really good for accents and sudden changes of mood, but this beginning can benefit from natural pressure: gravity and distance. Dropping your hand onto the left hand chords can allow them to resonate more naturally than if you actively slammed your hand down onto the notes.
3. More of a style thing, but think about where the piece is going. The first part sounds like it's building to the 50 second mark, so maybe a gradual crescendo could help shape the music.
4. Your slowing down around the 50 second mark feels forced. Think about slowing down more naturally, like the feeling you get when you're in a car and it's coasting - that feeling of slowing down there is what you can try to mimic with your speed.
5. In your B theme (after 1 minute or so), think about which notes need accents. Right now, everything is emphasized, which doesn't really give the piece any direction. The section directly after has a lot of arpeggios, and you can bring back the dynamics I talked about earlier to shape the direction you're going in.
6. In terms of your pedal, lifting your foot just a little bit more every time you change the pedal would be helpful. Some parts are a bit muddy in terms of sound quality.
7. Right at 3:20, that's the perfect time to cut sound and start pianissimo, or somewhere really soft. You just hit the climax of the piece and you let that sound linger in the air. From the residuals of that peak, a new sound blossoms. Starting soft lets the listener smoothly go from that climax back into the A theme.
These are just some thoughts I have right now. If you can send over the music, I could try playing a bit to give an example.

I'd send you the music but I don't have it written out yet. i just have it memorized. I don't really wanna write it out until I am done with it because I keep making changes.
I'll focus on your points in my practice for a few days and see if I can get it sounding better

I would also recommend giving the puzzle a shot if you have the time. If you have basic music knowledge, it shouldn't take more than an hour. Very contained to the score and the doc.
Don't worry about writing it out if it's just in your head right now.

im always so impressed by people who can play violin. composers always give the violins such difficult parts and nearly no rests; it would intimidate me quite a lot to be "on" all the time, always playing, never a chance to be in the background where if you miss your cue it's hard to notice.
if you couldn't tell, i have a concert next week and i'm very scared lol
