There hasn't been an active Star Wars thread here in quite a while, so I'll be the one to ask: Are you pumped for the new movie in less than a month? I definitely am, I've already got tickets for IMAX 3D and I can't wait.

I'm convinced Luke is in the movie, because there was a scene in one of the more recent trailers of a hooded man with a robot hand sitting next to R2-D2 at a fire. It can't not be him.

He's not necessarily absent. He's contractually obligated to stay in a neither-confirm-nor-deny position presswise until opening night. I was unfortunate enough personally to come across a synopsis leak. No spoilers though I promise ;)

Yeah I have read the synopsis and it seems to tie in with all the trailers that have been released. Why there have been so many trailers I don't know it's like they want to give the plot away. Especially if you link the leaked synopsis with all the scenes in the trailers and the new toy line then it all seems to fit too well. I'm off to see it in Imax on the 19th by then it will probably be leaked anyway.

I just got back from watching the new movie. I liked it quite a lot. I agree with Scoggles, it was #veryStarWars.
Spoiler text below. Highlight to read.
I did have some smaller issues with it though. Most of it's nitpicking, but I really didn't like the reveal of Kylo Ren. I didn't like the way he looked without his helm. He just looked like such a whiny kid to me for some reason. Maybe that was kind of what they were going for, but I just didn't feel intimidated at all by him. Which was a shame in my opinion.

Spoiler text below. Highlight to read.
Young, green-looking actors in First Order and whiny Kylo Ren make it seem like they're playing dress-up Empire, but their weapon and his force abilities are greater than anything we've seen yet. Basically, kids with egos and their massive toys. It's one thing that makes the film feel very different, even with as many parallel plot points as it has to the OT. Also, I like the name Ben Solo better than Ben Skywalker, even though the novels Luke named him after his mentor, Ben Kenobi. Also, the progeny of Anakin's second lightsaber is now a question I have, since they messed with the plot enough that the old canon no longer makes sense. (Luke lost it on Bespin when he lost his hand).

I saw it again today, this time in IMAX 3D on a 60-foot-wide screen. It was different. I must say, I'd never seen a "new" 3D movie before and I was not impressed with that aspect of it, for the most part. A few scenes were really cool in 3D, though. But the enormous screen and super high def audio was worthwhile.

For instance, there has been a lot of debate about whether or not Finn is at all Force sensitive or has any Force potential or what his midi-chlorian count might be. Most people, upon first watching, think that no, no way, of course he isn't, I mean, look at how clumbsy he is wielding blasters and lightsabers and gunning on starships... And how he thinks they can just "use the Force" to find Rey and take down the shields, but of course "That's not how the Force works!" However, I sort of assumed he was in the first viewing because of the fact that out of trillions of stormtroopers, he's the only one ever to defect, and things like that are explained in Star Wars by "the Force did it." Well, on the third viewing, right before the First Order uses the Starkiller to destroy the Hosnian system (five planets, none of which were Coruscant, by the way), while the Starkiller energy beams or whatever they are are still ON THEIR WAY to the Hosnian System, the camera is completely fixated on Finn, and we hear what sounds like millions of voices crying out in terror and then being suddenly silenced. The camera does not pan or cut away from Finn until the terrorized screaming stops, then we see the beams hit those planets and destroy them. If we can assume chronological continuity in A New Hope, Obi-Wan did not experience that disturbance in the Force until AFTER the destruction of Alderaan, so not only is Finn sensitive to the Force, he's more sensitive to it than Obi-Wan, one of the most powerful Jedi Masters in recent history.

So is Rey Han Solo's daughter or Luke's? At first I thought she had to be Han Solo's daughter, in keeping with the parallel plot points (the twins, Luke and Leia, and Kylo and Rey). Also, she is very good with machines, like Han Solo. But she could easily be Luke's daughter, with the lightsaber and the whole jedi thing. Also, did anybody notice Luke seeming a little pudgy?

No, if anything, Maz indicated that Luke is NOT Rey's father by saying that "your family" is not coming back for you, but Luke can be in your future. However, there are a lot of shady cover stories in Star Wars, told by Obi Wan and Palpatine and a variety of others who intend to deceive someone or eclipse the truth. The "Force back" or lightsaber fever dream actually shows a lot of history from the perspective of that particular lightsaber, and maybe the Force is just inhabiting the object in a particular way. After all, we've already seen that different Force users have different abilities, so maybe Rey's ability set includes sensing the histories of objects. But, yeah, my working theory on Rey is that Han and Leia both definitely know and recognize her, as does Luke. The best evidence for this is when Maz asks Han "Who's the girl?" and they cut to Rey walking down the stairs in Maz's place. And then Maz shows up down there. They have good reason not to tell Rey who she is, if she is the offspring of a Skywalker or a Kenobi or anyone else. Even if she was just a random child who was Force-sensitive that they identified, I'm pretty sure she started her training as a child, shortly before Ben Solo turned and murdered the remainder of Luke's Jedi academy. Then, when Luke freaked out and went into hiding, he Force-wiped her memory or something so they could hide her better from Snoke/The Knights of Ren/The First Order. Kylo Ren doesn't recognize her, but as soon as he heard that FN-2187 and the droid were being assisted by "a girl," he perked up, and later on, he started focusing on her more than the droid. Rey's commentary on all the green on Takodana also may be a hint about Jakku/Tatooine and hiding Force users on dessert planets. There, away from the burgeoning biome of a greener world, they can learn to focus their skills without being overwhelmed. Similarly, when Yoda, the greatest Jedi Master of all time, exiled himself to Dagobah, he was surrounded by so much of the Living Force that his presence was completely obscured. The exception to this is Leia, who grew up between Alderaan, Coruscant, and some of the other Core Worlds. Leia is as strong in the Force as Luke, but much less focused, and completely untrained. She grew up around politicians, and is much more intuitive about people, their intentions, their feelings, and so on. There's a fan theory going around that Luke married/canoodled with Obi-Wan's daughter (who has never existed in any EU or anything, they just assume he had a secret daughter) and Rey is so powerful because she's both a Skywalker AND a Kenobi, but I don't think they will do that.
