I just do not care about the plights of straight, white, cis men.

Wait, as in any individual's plight? Or as a group?

I have four white, male children. They are kind and sweet. They pick me wildflowers and help with the dishes. They are people and there is a good chance that three of them will be most likely be straight. It really makes me sad to think their needs or issues will be disregarded because of their sexual preference and the color of their skin.

They won't be, though. Society will cater to their needs and desires for their entire lives. I may not personally, but don't you worry, North American culture will pick up the slack for me.

Well, I still love you, Ant.

Why not care about everyone's issues and needs regardless of their skin color or what their gender is?

Because this is the unpopular opinion thread, god damnit. I also just noticed that there are two unpopular opinions threads in separate forum sections. What the fuck?

Lmao. Okay, fair.

this one is for the spicy ones

i don't know i had the same question

Being a (straight) white male doesnโ€™t necessarily make your life easier.

Not everything bad that ever happened in Wales is England's fault.

to get back to marijuana vs cigarettes

isnโ€™t it both smoke though

I think that's where you're confused. It's not smoke that gives you cancer. It's the chemicals in cigarette smoke that give you cancer. In fact, smokeless tobacco like dip and chew can give one oral cancer.

@Chet (from the other thread): Marijuana is certainly less harmful than alcohol, but it can cause serious problems. It's linked to an increased likelihood of psychosis and, while it isn't anywhere near as addictive as, say, alcohol, it's still addictive. I don't care if it's not strictly biologically addictive. It's psychologically addictive. The risk is far too high for the reward.

Now, to be clear, I don't think we should ban drugs (any drugs). That is a stupid way to get rid of them, with the wonderful side effects of criminalising all sorts of people unnecessarily and ensuring that people who are using substances don't have any way to ensure that they are doing so safely. In Ontario, alcohol is only sold through licensed bars and restaurants, and two stores: The Beer Store and the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). So what I would like to see is:

1. Decriminalisation of all drugs. Yes, all of them.
2. All drugs more serious than caffeine should be sold only with strict licensing requirements, through establishments like the LCBO, to ensure that the drugs are 'safe', as far as you can safely consume heroin or whatever. Let's call it the DCBO. Since this is my hypothetical, we're all in Ontario.
3. Those places should also provide resources, for free and anonymously, to assist people with stopping using the substances. Housing, medical treatment, assistance finding employment, counselling, etc. If people have substance use problems, it's not because they woke up one day and decided to ruin their lives. There's a reason. They should receive help for that reason.
4. Ban the glorification of substance use (of any kind) in media. We teach children how to behave by showing them media, and that media is really fucked up, with very little oversight. If we put out a clear message that drug use is an illness to be pitied, rather than people who use drugs are 'cool', that's going to reduce consumption.
5. Eventually people will no longer be socialised into drug use, or forced into it by their circumstances.

That is what I would like.
