If you spend more than an hour total a day on social media, stop. Any social media. At all. It’s bad for you, I’m not the first one to tell you it’s bad for you, you know it’s bad for you, you know you should find something healthier to do with your time, and you’ve probably even said something like “I should stop doing this so much” at least once before. Pick up a hobby instead. Like meth. Or a book. Like anything by Marquis de Sade.
With the slow day at work, my hour’s up. See y’all tomorrow if I get around to it.

You’re holding a computer. You’re basically holding the world’s biggest and most up to date library in your pocket. There’s even games on it. There’s porn too. There’s so many things to do with it other than mindlessly read and listen to other people talk.

Multitasking. I'm on TCaS, but I'm also listening to music, smoking weed, petting a cat, and hanging out with friends. Does that count towards my hour?

…You’re high! Looking at the problems of modern society while you’re high is scary. Wouldn’t you rather be engaged in socialising with your friends and petting your cat and getting lost in your own head than running away from it? A book for you, Mr., Ms. or Mx. pothead. It’s impossible to not like while high.

I feel like there should be more nuance to this conversation. Social media is pretty horrible for your mental health, but communication and interaction isn't. These things could maybe be fixed to be more healthy as platforms but profit drives them away from making the consumer have a safer time on their apps. Facebook at least has done tons of research about how bad their platforms are for people and how it makes users feel bad about themselves, but to blame that greater issue on users feels like the wrong approach.
You're telling overweight people to eat less ice cream and they legitimately enjoy aspects of it even if there's some poison in there. You're not wrong maybe, but their mental health is affecting the ability to make that decision. Be present, don't use it while hanging out with friends or family unless you're sharing something with them. Don't use it too often or for too long at a time. Be healthier, be nicer to yourself, all those things. BUT, you're acting like that's an easy choice for people when it's become an emotional crutch. The algorithmic content we are being served at this point is a much bigger problem than personal choices.

Well everyone I've ever talked to about this stuff acts like it's an insult to their character to ask them to make those lifestyle changes, so I'm assuming a level of unhealthy in the users already. I guess that isn't a fair assumption on this website, but a lot of my family have become super unhealthy post-tiktok. It's weird to see it happening real time and think they have any agency in it, but you're right that they probably have more choice than they are exercising.
I guess I like to assume these people are victims so I can ignore their propensity for this behavior.

When someone’s addicted to cigarettes, we tell them to stop smoking and find ways to help them stop smoking. We don’t throw our hands in the air and go “well it’s a bigger problem than just that because the societal issues around tobacco companies so you can’t just tell someone to stop smoking.”

Jul 14, 2022 - 4:32 PM
Correct, but before smoking was well known as a major issue or while it was still well accepted in society, you don't think people were treated poorly for asking folks not to smoke?
The general attitude and tone in a room changes if you bring this stuff up right now, I'm not saying it shouldn't be brought up but I'm saying there is a lot of conversation to be had about what we can do politically to help alleviate the problem. Regulation of cigarettes and warning labels had to start becoming a thing because it was getting so bad, I don't doubt we will see something similar online soon.
Edit - what I'm getting at is that we don't have warning labels, mass regulation, and "truth" ads yet about this addiction. I'm not sure it's as easy to convince people of how bad something is when they don't know how much it's hurting them. The societal knowledge of that is lacking.

You mean back in the days when the concept of addiction was still vague and doctors advised patients to smoke? Yeah I think we’re far enough beyond that to know to not avoid talking about a problem until it becomes so bad that billions of dollars get spent on proving that something obviously bad for you is bad for you and government has to step in and force companies to tell consumers it’s bad for you. We got to where we needed those labels and Truth advertisements by doing exactly that: not talking about the fact it’s a problem.

People don't think it's a problem. We are even becoming explicit in society right now about how dangerous it is for your mental health and privacy, but people brush it off over and over again. I don't think people are taking it seriously at all, so it's a good idea to educate the ones close to you on why it's dangerous, of course! But, it is also a good idea to figure out what else can be done to educate people and motivate them politically on a larger scale.
Also, companies are absolutely not interested in educating you on the problems in their products until absolutely forced to.

I'm not disagreeing with that, I've just been treated like shit for saying it so I think it's not that simple. I can't avoid these people, and they are addicted to an unhealthy extent to something that is still considered normal/non-harmful as far as they are all concerned.
These are the same people who got mad at me for saying vaping is harmful to them, even if it's not as bad as cigarettes, and that the way in which it's being treated as "totally okay and healthy" was pretty disingenuous.
